About Us

Jobs for America's Graduates – District of Columbia, Inc. (JAG-DC) is a non-profit corporation established in 2006 for the purpose of helping youth stay in school through graduation and obtain the skills they need to transition successfully into the workforce or post-secondary education. It is based on a comprehensive program of services (including classroom instruction, mentoring, tutoring, work based learning, leadership development) provided during the school day, after school, and for 12 months following graduation. JAG-DC will implement the three (3) program applications of the JAG Model:

Project Reach
Project Reach inspires middle school students in the District of Columbia. Project Reach partners with public middle schools to offer students an experiential-based curriculum that increases motivation and teaches real-world skills necessary for academic and career success. The program is offered to students in grades 6-8, and combines classroom learning, leadership development, and organized community service learning.

JAG-DC serves young people with barriers to success. The more barriers to success that a young person might have, the more he or she is considered 'at-risk' of graduating from high school or having a successful transition from school to an entry level job that leads to a career.

Through a formal affiliation agreement with Jobs for America’s Graduates, JAG-DC receives JAG Model books, training and technical assistance to implement the JAG Model. JAG-DC also benefits from the national leadership of over thirty public and private sector chief executives, including ten Governors and several corporate executives, who serve on the JAG Board of Directors.

After more than two decades of operation, JAG has proven to be one of the most cost-effective and successful state-level strategies for tackling high dropout rates, low academic performance, youth unemployment, and other critical issues related to at-risk youth.

In 2006 the DC Public School System and Jobs for America’s Graduates national office collaborated to create the private, non-profit organization Jobs for America’s Graduates – District of Columbia, Inc. (JAG-DC) to help middle- and high-school students reconnect to school and successfully graduate and transition into the workforce.

The JAG-DC program is housed in a classroom within a partnering school, and is delivered as a year-round course. Critical to the JAG-DC program is the relationship established between the student and the JAG-DC Specialist. Each Specialist works with a total of 35 to 45 students and plays the unique role of teacher, guidance counselor, and mentor. Specialists establish a one-on-one relationship with each student. Although the Specialists work directly for JAG-DC, they serve as adjunct faculty within our partnering schools. Each partnering school establishes a JAG-DC Advisory Board, including participation from teachers, guidance counselors, and administration.

The JAG-DC program teaches 37 core competencies comprised of six skill sets: personal skills, leadership skills, communication skills, job attainment skills, job success skills, and career development skills. JAG-DC’s experiential-based curriculum combines classroom learning with student enrichment activities that help to nurture leadership development, oral and written communication skills, career development skills, and community service learning.
JAG-DC vigilantly tracks and responds to the outcomes of our programs, always keeping students at the center of the educational process.
