“JAG-DC’s Primary Focus is on Dropout Prevention!” “In the United States, approximately 70% of students who enter the 9th grade graduate from high school within 5 years. In the District of Columbia, however, only 43% (as cited in Double the Numbers – a report filed jointly by the DC College Access Program, DC Education Compact, DC Public Schools, and the DC State Education Office in October of 2006) of students who enter the 9th grade graduate from high school within 5 years. Within Wards 7 and 8 – which are where 5 out of 7 of JAG’s sites are located - this number decreases with only about 1 in 3 students finishing high school and 1 in 20 earning a college degree. Even more discouraging is the fact that these numbers don’t take into account the estimated 15% of DC students who never enroll in high school. JAG-DC’s primary focus, therefore, is on dropout prevention. Jobs for America's Graduates, or JAG, is a school-to-career program implemented in 700 highschools, alternative schools, community colleges, and middle schools across the country and United Kingdom.
